Shonan Tei Japanese Resto Bar has left me in awe for the past year. It is that one tiny bitsy restaurant in Mindanao Avenue which almost always have cars outside. It made me wonder how good their food is.

IMG_4717

The place seems like a legit Japanese restaurant. It has very limited seats. The servers were nice and attentive. Ms. Janet who is the owner and wife of the chef was very accommodating. I thought she knew the guests on the other table because of the way she approached them but I was baffled when she gave us that same warm treatment.

IMG_4702

While we were checking the menu out, we were served with this pickled sea weed or something. It was appetizing.

IMG_4665

The sibs and I shared the following delicious dishes:

Tuna Salad

Tuna Salad

It was very refreshing. The tuna tasted real fresh and the sour acidic vinaigrette blended well with the whole dish.

Wagyu Saikoro Steak

Wagyu Saikoro Steak

This wagyu appetizer was my favorite amongst everything that we devoured that night. It was very very juicy and tender to the point of melting to the mouth. Once you took a bite, you will taste the savory juice of the beef exploding in your mouth. It was really good.

IMG_4705

Sorry I didn’t get to take note or a pic of the menu so I have no idea what the name of this dish is. All I know is that it was delicious and tasty. The noodles were soft and the beef on top was perfectly thin.

IMG_4698

Katsudon

Katsudon was great. The meat was tender and the rice was covered in the sweet savory sauce.

Yakitori

Yakitori

This skewers were properly grilled and so so yummy. It was only priced at P50 each.

IMG_4710

Everything tasted authentic, maybe because the chef was really from Japan. We were their last customer for that night but the treatment was as warm as if we were the first. It was a great dining experience, I must say.

rest o’ rama

IMG_4582

Dining outside has become very common in our contemporary periods. An average Filipino may dine outside at least once a week, be it a fastfood or proper restaurant.

IMG_4583

I am always in search of a good place to eat at. For me, dining should always be a pleasant experience for all of our five senses. Luckily, we chanced upon this newly opened restaurant in Congressional Avenue Extension called, REST O’ RAMA.

IMG_4643

The restaurant was very pleasant to the eyes. The decorations were well coordinated and not too crowded in a way that complements each other. The chairs were of lovable powder baby colors.

IMG_4641

The restaurant is mostly of wood designs and accents.

IMG_4590

IMG_4635

Walls were decorated with positive statement pieces.

IMG_4629

They used kettles as lamp covers which is very creative.

IMG_4636

During the time of our visit, there were a couple of tables filled but none of the guests were noisy at all. You may dine at peace here. It was a pleasant experience for the ears.

IMG_4627

Upon sitting, the servers will immediately offer some warm soup and cold water to drink.

IMG_4598

They offer lunch deals for only P98.

IMG_4586

The Sibs and I tried the following:

IMG_4604

Nachos, P150

Their nachos was served with cheese dip, salsa, and ground beef all in separate containers. It was crunchy, tangy, and tasty.

Torikatsu, P98

Torikatsu, P98

I had the Torikatsu out of their lunch menu which was normally priced at P140. It was a tender chicken breast covered in breading served with rice and slaw and a sweet sauce. I am not aware if there is a difference between their torikatsu from lunch and normal menu but the meal that I had was pretty good and filling enough.

IMG_4607

Fish and Chips, P150

The fish and chips was good as well. Fish was soft and properly cooked avoiding the ‘lansa’ taste and the chips were thin and crisp on point. I just didn’t like the tartar sauce that came along with it. It tasted like a cheap mayo with added garlic powder. Very minor flaw that can be altered though.

Seafood Mediterranean, P190

Seafood Mediterranean, P190

I am not the biggest fan of cream pastas but the sib said that this pasta was not bad at all. It was generously served with shrimp and parmesan cheese.

IMG_4631

We had a pleasant experience in this restaurant. The staff were attentive and always ready to refill our water bottles. They regularly checked on us and asked if there is anything more they can serve us. Plus, the price range was really affordable and the serving size was appropriate.

It is always good discovering new places like this.

s&r new york style pizza

I had been to S&R Membership Shopping once when I tagged along a friend. We had their pizza after shopping and I was really satisfied with its taste and the serving size. Originally the food items from S&R are only exclusive for members (and friends of the members like me hehe),but now you can get their pizza, calzone, churros, chicken, burger, salad, and etc without getting a membership. They put up branches around Manila instead. Well, I’ve heard of a branch in Eastwood City and the one that we visited in UP Town Center.

image (4)

Ordering was casual like in any other fast food chains in the Metro.

image (3)

They have these self servicing area where you can get the condiments that you like. If you care for more relish and onions, you may get so through these turning dispensers.

image (5)

The place was very casual. It has that ‘food court feel’ that you get when you are in a mall. The chairs and tables are positioned closely to one another and there were no servers to help around.image (2)

New York Style Pizza

New York Style Pizza

The Babe and I had their pizza and calzone combo. Both items were served with 16 oz of soda. The pizza was priced at P119 while the calzone was P129.

Pepperoni Calzone

Pepperoni Calzone

Food was really good and didn’t disappoint. We were so full when we finished eating that we skipped dessert for the first time in history. Lol.

never ever coming back

image (2)

On our way to Batangas we had a bite at Carlo’s Pizza Restaurant in Tagaytay City.

image (4)

Being forever inlove with nature, I was excited when we reached this place. It had the perfect view for the the taal lake and taal volcano.

image (9)

But the excitement was easily defeated by the poor service that the restaurant staff offered us. They were lazy and were always inside the restaurant though the customers were all seated outside. The Babe had to go inside the restaurant just to let them know that we were ready to order. We had to call the waitress a number of times but it’s as if she was pretending to be deaf. They couldn’t argue that they were busy since there was barely anyone that time. Other than us, there was just one table filled by a couple.

image (8)

image (7)

image (6)

The worst part was that this carbonara had a dead insect along with the greens. Lucky it was me who went for it first. Mum said that she would not have seen it because she was not wearing her eye glasses. We were calling out for the lady server but she kept on looking away so we had to call the attention of the male staff. The male server was not any good as well. When we told him that there was an insect in the food that they served, he was in huge disbelief and checked the food closely before taking it back to the kitchen.

Being served that way, we thought that it is possible for them to just remove the insect and reheat the pasta instead of making a fresh one so we cancelled the order right away. They did not have any initiative to apologize for serving us such bad food. It’s as if it was in our great favor that we stumbled upon Carlo’s Pizza that day and not theirs. And as the title stated, I am never ever coming back to this place. N-E-V-E-R.

backyard kitchen + brew

UP Town Center is fast becoming one of my personal favorite go-to-dine places. For the past month I had been here four times trying out a total of seven restaurants. The latest dinescapade being with Backyard Kitchen and Brew.

dscf4351

I am a listener of the Boys Night Out at Magic 89.9 and they have mentioned this place more than dozens of times. Made me wonder what this restaurant has to offer so The Babe and I checked it out.

image (7)

I liked the interior of this restaurant — the wooden chairs and tables, metal bucket lamps, plants and other modern pieces all made sense.

image (14)

Thrice Cooked Crispy Pork Cheek, P295

I had the Thrice Cooked Crispy Pork Cheek which they said on the menu was stewed, roasted, then grilled served with sauteed kale, caramelized onions, and forbidden black rice with adobo hoisin reduction.

image (4)

I was disappointed because the crackling was hard as rock, the fat was not rendered properly, and the meat was tough to chew. The Babe asked if I’d like to return the meal but I was in an incredibly good mood that time plus our server, Mark, was really efficient that I dismissed the idea.

image (13)

Slow Roasted Pork Belly, P275

The Babe had the Slow Roasted Pork Belly rubbed with home made rum coke barbecue sauce served with papaya slaw, and a choice between rice and mac and cheese. He gave me a portion so I was able to finish my rice without having to eat the tough parts of my meal. The pork had a nearly ‘melts in your mouth’ characteristic which we both enjoyed.

image (18)

Butterbeer, P125

The little potterhead in me decided to try out their infamous butterbeer. Other flavored beers available were macadamia, salted caramel, passionfruit, and raspberry. If I hadn’t only watched “That Sugar Film”, I would probably rave about this butterbeer. It was sweet and creamy and alcoholic, everything that I wanted in a drink. But, that documentary affected my sugar intake bigtime. Like I said if it had only been on a different circumstance, it would have probably been my favorite beer ever.

Pizookie, P385

Pizookie, P385

What a nice way to end the meal with a baked to order chewy chocolate chip cookie with ice cream on top. The Babe is a better judge of desserts as he is the sweetest tooth in the planet and he liked this dessert. It was warm and chewy as promised.

I couldn’t complain with the service that we got, everyone was active and attentive. I’d love to be back here at the backyard.

gerry’s jeepney

image (13)

The Parentals invited The Babe and I for a lunch out but they left the deciding out to us. We were feeling Filipino food that day so we drove to Maginhawa Street and headed to Gerry’s Jeepney.

image (12)

It was lunch time when we arrived hence the long line. The place was packed with families, friends, students, workers, etc. They also catered for a Christening reception when we were there.

image (15)

I was not able to get the name of this lady in the picture but she was the receptionist. She was exceptional in doing her job. Her queue was organized and she made sure that we get the service that we like.

image (10)

The receptionist explained that there was an event that they catered for so she kindly asked for our patience. She asked whether we would like to sit on the jeepneys or the restaurant inside which was airconditioned. It was scorching hot that day so we chose the latter.

image (4)

I must give credit to the design committee of this restaurant. It was well thought of and executed. It looked like they spent a lot of their budget and space on props but it is rewarding to know that they achieved the ambiance that they were going for.

image (1)

They have little sorts of entertainment while waiting such as the sungka. It took us a good one hour to be sitted inside but as soon as we came in the food was ready to be served as they took our order in advance.

image (8)

Since this is a Filipino restaurant and they have boodle fights in the menu, using your hands to eat is very common. They have a number of sink to use for handwashing.

image (3)

We ordered three dishes but I was only able to take a photo of one. We were so hungry so I didn’t bother taking a shot of the sinigang na ulo sa miso and the grilled tanigue.

image (7)

Crispy Pata, P375

Crispy pata was not as crispy as we wanted it to be. Maybe because we ordered it in advance and it took us a while to get a table. I think it was just a matter of timing that went wrong here. The sinigang was so good I think I finished half of the soup myself. The servers, however, were not as accommodating as their receptionist.

1

Perfect way to end a hearty Filipino meal is the dirty ice cream which was offered right in front of the restaurant. I was surprised with the price as the last time I had it, it was only P5.

original glazed

image

Just sharing my happiness.

Got these original glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts for free! We bought via their drive thru counter and surprised as the cashier offered as these three babies while waiting. It was the Krispy Kreme at the Petron Gas Station along North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). If I am not mistaken it is the first Krispy Kreme branch that you will see if you’re driving up north from Manila.

Have a Happy October!

a veneto pizzeria ristorante

The sibs and I went for out for dinner. We were driving along Visayas Avenue when we spotted this rustic Italian restaurant, A Veneto Pizzeria Ristorante.

image (4)

The restaurant was cozy and dim. I think they were going for a homey-pubby feel.

image (3)

Chicken Wings, P200

The chicken wings was my least favorite on this meal. It is a deep fried chicken wings marinated in exotic herbs and spices smothered in rich sweet chili sauce. It tasted as if it were re-heated and there was nothing special about the sauce. I expected the meat to be moist and juicy but I got dry and quite tough meat.

New England's Best, P500

New England’s Best, P500

The pizza was good and served straight from the oven. If given a choice, I just wish the dough could have been thinner for I am a fan of thin crust pizzas. The New England’s Best has ground beef, pepperoni, mushroom, onion, bell pepper, and sausage. There were a few choices for the serving size.

Slice – P120

Small – P280

Medium – P500

Large – P695

What I also learned from this place is that you may make your own pizza. You may put more of the ingredients that you like and omit those that don’t appeal in your taste buds.

image (6)

Baked Ziti with Meatballs, P365

This pasta dish has 3 meaty pieces of Italian meatballs on top of a penne pasta which was baked in rich marinara sauce and topped with soft mozzarella cheese. It was so delicious and cheesy. I love how generous they were in the mozzarella. We absolutely dig cheesy pastas.

It was a good dining experience and I’d probably bring some family and friends along with me to try this place out.

ally’s all day breakfast

I have been to Ally’s All Day Breakfast in Teacher’s Village for a number of times. It became one of the favorites due to the hearty choices and sumptuous servings.

image (1)

The restaurant has a tiny room for 5 or so tables which can accommodate less than 20 people. There are a few more seats available outside though but you will miss the air conditioning.

ally's

Service was always good whenever I breakfast here. Even if there is just one wait staff during early hours, they are efficient as ever. There is almost always a line outside because the place is flocked by breakfast people.

IMG_1547

IMG_1546

IMG_1543

I have a few favorites in their menu, the rellenong bangus, daing na bangus and batangas tapa. I have never been disappointed with the food because it had always been tasty. They are good in maintaining the quality of food and this is a good thing for them. I’d say in food (and in most) business consistency is key.

What is your favorite breakfast-go-to-place?
